What Does Cam Think?
Of the premium brands that we carry, Knaggs is one of the most iconic. They have outstanding attention to detail, drop-dead gorgeous looks, and incredible overall quality. Of the models Knaggs makes, the Chena is one of the shop favorites. I’m always intrigued by hollowbody guitars, especially ones that are not as big and unwieldy as a traditional hollowbody. They impart a special tonality to the attack that’s hard to explain, but it’s a combination of air and bloom. Something worth exploring if you are looking for a tone that’s different than your standard solid body, set-neck instrument. The Chena features a 12” radius and 24.75” scale, so it’s familiar in all the right ways.
This Knaggs comes standard with Bare Knuckle Mule pickups, which fall into the traditional PAF style of humbuckers. They are very faithful to the PAF sound, including EQ and overall output. The neck position Mule is fat and warm, but with a clear and defined high-end. It doesn’t get muddy and remains articulate, even when pushing a distorted amp.
The bridge position Mule has a defined midrange, but not nasally so. Chords sound detailed and individual strings can be heard, even when the amp is gained up. The middle position is scooped and single coil-esque. It’s a great position for some muted chords or arpeggiated leads. And every position seems to have a bit more bloom after the initial attack, a result of the hollowbody design. The guitar is alive and quite resonant!
How Does It Play?
The guitar sets up with string action right at 4/64” across all strings measured at the 12th fret. The neck profile falls into the ’59 category with a round C carve. It’s pleasantly fat, but with comfortable shoulders so you can still get around quickly when you need to. The frets are beautifully leveled and big enough for quick licks and bends.
