The Knaggs Kenai model is an elegant single-cut design with absolutely gorgeous aesthetics and premium quality throughout. This hollowbody version of the Kenai features a spruce top that elicits an acoustic tonality. You get reduced weight and some additional resonance as a result, but the same overall form factor, size, and carve of a standard Kenai. Other specs include a mahogany body and neck, rosewood fretboard, and Bareknuckle Mule pickups.

What Does Cam Think?

The Kenai Hollowbody is the perfect marriage between vintage and modern design elements. If you are familiar with the solid body Kenai model, there won’t be too many surprises when trying the Hollowbody model, except for the weight! It is a light 6.2 lbs, making it a very comfortable and gig-friendly instrument in general.

When I plugged it in, I was pleasantly surprised with how much of the actual semi hollow-body design translated to the tone of the guitar. It’s not only for aesthetics or weight relief, there really is a tonal benefit. Notes seem a bit more airy than a solid Kenai, adding a slight acoustic resonance. And it’s not just coming through the amp, I can hear this resonance unplugged as well. I also really like their ‘Knaggs Influence’ bridge design. The bridge itself is adjustable and sits atop a baseplate, which has an attached tailpiece. It really is an elegant design.

The Kenai Hollowbody features a set of Bareknuckle Mule humbuckers. The Mule is a killer all around humbucker based on an original PAF design. In the neck position, tones were very well balanced. I felt I got the perfect amount of clarity without the tone being thin. The bass response felt immediate, not sluggish. In the bridge, I got a nice bark to rhythms, yet arpeggiated lines felt sparkly. With both pickups on, it was all jangle.

When I put the amp into overdrive, the pickups kept up well. In fact, they had a nice articulation in all positions. In the neck, I got a sweetness that felt great to dig into. And the bridge position, man… talk about the perfect pickup for rock tones. Just full and prominent in all the right ways. It is a versatile pickup set that seems to shine in many different musical scenarios, both clean and dirty.

How Does It Play?

The Kenai Hollowbody is beautifully playing guitar. With a scale length of 24.75”, bends feel slinky and effortless. I think this also has a lot to do with the design of the bridge. The break angle is just right to help with ease of playability. The neck shape is a round C with a very slight V. You probably won’t even think of it as a V, but it helps with the overall comfort of the neck. It doesn’t feel too fat or wide, it just fits in your hand. Frets are a medium size, great for chords and leads alike. String height measures 4/64” at the low E and also at the high E.
