The Knaggs Kenai model is an elegant single-cut design with gorgeous aesthetics and premium quality throughout. This hollowbody version of the Kenai features a Tier 1 figured maple top, which elicits an acoustic-like quality to the tone and feel. You get reduced weight and some additional resonance as a result, but the same overall form factor, size, and carve of a standard Kenai. Other specs include a mahogany body and neck, ebony fretboard, and Bareknuckle Mule pickups.
What Does Cam Think?
This Kenai Hollowbody is a special one. Not only does it have the specs I gravitate towards, but it sounds, looks, and plays amazing. Knaggs makes some of the most elegant and well-made guitars we carry, and this Kenai HB is no exception. From the wood and finish work, to the inlay and fretwork, you’d be hard pressed to find a more premium instrument than this one.
This Kenai HB is equipped with a set of Bare Knuckle Mule humbuckers. This is an amazing pair of PAF-voiced pickups. While Bare Knuckle are well known for their higher output humbuckers, I can see why Knaggs chose the Mule as stock on many of their models, they sound incredible!
The neck position Mule is what I would call the quintessential PAF. It has body and clarity, enough output for liquid leads, but not enough to compromise tone. Clean, it sounds phenomenal, with a three-dimensional spaciousness. Each note has a depth and resonance that I don’t usually hear, which is due in part to the hollow body nature of the guitar.
Things get really interesting in the bridge position. Even with high amounts of gain, the pickup retains clarity and never sounds muffled or too bassy. It has plenty of body, attack, and midrange for those chewy harmonic overtones. And into a clean amp, the mids don’t get too honky, nor do the highs get too bright. It’s a useful tone, especially for arpeggiated passages. The middle position is nice for strumming chords with a semi-acoustic aesthetic. This seems to be pleasantly exaggerated with the hollow body of the Kenai HB.
How Does It Play?
The 24.75” scale length makes for a slinky playing experience. The ebony fretboard is silky smooth. The neck shape is a round C with a very slight V in the middle, which helps with the overall comfort. The frets aren’t too big or too small. Just right for chords and easy bending. The string height sits at 4/64” across all strings, measured at the 12 fret.
