What Does Josh Think?
What a Strat! First of all, the obvious… it weighs just 7 ¼ pounds with an alder body and bigger ‘50s style neck. As you might expect, resonance is NOT lacking. Light aging is completed by Chris Fleming (former Fender Masterbuilder). The pickups are wound to Chris’ specs and to good effect.
The neck position is juicy and just slightly scooped. In place of the more aggressive midrange of the ‘60s Strats, this one has a more gentle mid register with a round, throaty attack. This is bookended by a bodacious bottom and smooth highs.
Moving backwards to the neck/middle “in between” tone, I love that this position suffers zero volume loss and maintains the bold bottom end of the neck pickup. It has the quintessential spank, but it leaves out the more filtered quality that can suck the volume and body out of this position. The perfect middle ground in my opinion.
If you want the more quacky Strat flavor, you have only to switch to the bridge/middle position. The midrange rises upward and the pickups interplay with a more funk-leaning, filtered quality.
I love a pickup that has a vowel you can move around with the tone knob, and the bridge pickup on this guitar absolutely nails it! At the lower reaches of the tone knob you can garner tones that vary from the sound of a wah cocked back, to the rich midrange of a humbucker. Around seven you transition to just a gently rolled-off top end and then progress gradually to the wide open, bitey single coil tone beyond.
How Does It Play?
The neck features a very well-proportioned V to remove a little bulk under the palm, transitioning smoothly to C at the heel. There are necks that make their V-ness immediately evident, and then there are those that simply make a chunky neck more comfortable. This is the latter. The string action measures just 4/64” across all strings at the 12th fret without a hint of buzz.
