The Saticoy series of guitars are handmade S-style instruments crafted in Santa Clarita California. The Era series features a 4 stage “Flash Coat” ultra-thin nitro finish, allowing the guitar to resonate and breath and look good while doing so!
What Does Aidan Think?
Cards on the table… my attention will always be drawn to the slightly familiar yet unconventional-looking guitars, especially ones that look like they marry several disparate elements together in one beautiful mess. So when I picked this guitar up I wanted it to sound as interesting as I thought it looked.
Thankfully, it does! The triple P90/strat-style switching setup is something that I think often sounds better on paper than it does in real life because it needs a specific type of tonal character to pull off well. If there isn’t enough snap and clarity, positions 2 and 4 become muddy and useless. However, the alder body, the chopped tele bridge, and these articulate P90s achieve a remarkable amount of clarity, making every one of the 5 positions usable.
You’re not going to get the mid-scooped glassyness that you would from a 60s strat pickup, but what you lose there you make up for in punchy, barking mids – more like a 50s strat if it had a bit more body. The brass saddles help tame the high end and tighten the lows, and the out-of-phase positions are some of the most balanced and full-bodied I’ve ever heard. The bridge position serves up all the snarl of a great LP Junior, too!
The “amoeba” body shape is comfortable, and it balances nicely on a strap as well, and the slightly asymmetrical neck carve is more unconsciously appreciated than consciously. These ergonomic changes aren’t particularly obvious when the guitar is in hand, but they were things that I found myself missing when playing other guitars.
How Does It Play?
The string action on this beauty measures just 4/64” at the 12th fret across all strings. This neck is the perfect example of a medium C with a bit of extra love applied during the hand-sanding process.
Lance Lerman of LsL favors a slight asymmetric C that takes a little meat off the bass side to make the spine of the neck fit squarely in the palm of the hand. When he goes full blown with it, he calls it the “Sherry” profile. This one is subtle and technically falls under the medium C moniker, but gives you a taste of Lance’s personal favorite profile. Once you’ve played it, you might find it hard to go back!
