What Do We Think?
The Varsity Reverb fills the middle ground between some popular American- and British-voiced combos. With the negative feedback switch engaged it has a rounded top end and a nice, mild compression. It stays tight where many American amps get flubby and is voiced a little more forward in the mids. Breakup starts pretty early with humbuckers, but this is by no means a quiet amp and it stays taught and responsive all the way up the volume dial.
Disengage the negative feedback loop (either by switch on the amp or with included footswitch) to bump the gain up 8db in the power section and “open up” the amp in the process. Now the Varsity shares the top end of an AC30 while retaining the warm bottom of a Blackface. Want to go full British flavor? Roll the bass down to really emphasize the amp’s inherent chime.
The Reverb is smooth, and nicely focused from an EQ standpoint. It has a moderately long dwell that hangs around but sits pleasingly under the note. If we were to compare it to a non-spring reverb, it would favor a hall reverb categorization. Think the intro of The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” for reference. The reverb is independently footswitchable as well, right along with the negative feedback boost!
