Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Does Cam Think?
Of all the Marios we have in stock, this T-style is the most classic. 1-piece swamp ash body, 1-piece maple neck… it’s a slab of tone! Even un-amplified, this thing is punchy and articulate. The relic job is fantastic! If I didn’t see Mario’s initials on the headstock, I’d honestly assume it was a vintage instrument. The neck is beautifully carved and worn in.
Pickups are a Porter Custom Tele set. They are expertly aged to match the relic aesthetic. Both pickups use Alnico 5 magnets for a slightly beefier output. The bridge position features a staggered design, with raised G and D string poles and a copper baseplate.
The bridge pickup is full and punchy but has cut and spank. It will cut through the mix without sounding brittle. It has that quintessential T-style tone in spades, but with a little more oomph behind it.
The neck position is warm and full. It works great for jazz chording, single notes, and strumming. It’s a very versatile neck pickup that does a lot of things very well. The middle position is all spank! I love a good T-style middle position because it has its own thing going on. This one is super funky with that classic scooped midrange, great for muted chords.
Overall, this Mario T is perfect for someone looking for a vintage looking, feeling, and sounding T-style, but with superior playability. The neck is just so comfortable and worn in. The guitar is like an old friend, an instrument that’s familiar and one you can always count on.
How Does It Play?
The string action is low without buzz. Barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and just under 4/64” on the high E. The neck profile is Mario’s “Classic C”, which is a great middle of the road neck profile for comfort, but still has meat on the bone. It’s beautifully rounded and silky smooth all the way up.
