Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Does Daniel Think?
Known for creating wonderfully lightweight guitars, Mario Martin has produced their lightest build to date with this particular El Chupacabra! In fact, at 4lbs 12oz it might be the lightest weight electric guitar you have ever held! The neck is a gorgeous, flamed piece of roasted quarter sawn maple with a slab rosewood fingerboard. You aren’t going to have any problems with this neck moving on you through climate changes. Mario takes extra care to role the fingerboard edges just right for unbeatable comfort in the hand.
This guitar has enough output and clarity from the Mojotone Silver Foils to absolutely rock, but we find its most stunning asset to be the huge depth and warmth of the low end, especially on the neck pickup. This is an instrument that would take full advantage of the bright cap on the front end of your amp. We tested it through a vintage Fender Vibrolux Reverb and different pickup settings yielded a tone that conjured a cross between Roy Buchanan and David Grissom. We know you won’t be disappointed.
How Does It Play?
Mario guitars are dialed in perfectly by the builders, and they’re just down the road so the guitars really don’t even go through any environment change from their shop to ours. But we still do our due diligence just as on every other guitar we sell, making sure we are familiar with the guitar on a personal level and giving one more test of every component and a final check on the setup before shipping. But to sum it up in just a few words, playing a Martin Martin guitar is simultaneously effortless and electrifying.
