Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Does Josh Think?
The sustain is real. You may not be used to a Tele having this kind of ring to it. This is a very resonant piece of swamp ash and, along with the roasted maple neck, contributes to the guitar weighing an airy 6lb. To be exact, it’s 5lb 15.7oz on our scale. The Porter 9T pickup set is throaty, thick and moderately high output. But with all that, they are incredibly clear and focused. This is truly one of the best pickups sets we have heard. It wowed us at first listen and that first impression has just gotten stronger every time we go back to the guitar.
Going through the pickup options, the bridge is burlier than your standard Tele. The midrange is warm but the tone is still articulate if you want to twang. Rolling back the tone knob delivers tones in the realm of a vintage low wind humbucker without choking out the volume. The middle position has loads of spank and sparkle. This position interacts with the compression of your amp and really kicks back when you want those powerful clean tones. The next position on the switch is the neck pickup alone, which is where the true throaty quality comes in. It is rich and complex but sits right on top of a mix at the same time. You find yourself playing less because you want to hear more, if that makes sense.
And now we unlock the fourth position! This is the two pickups wired in series, essentially a huge, spread apart humbucker. This position is fat, a touch dark, and ready to rumble. Run full throttle it will deliver single note passages with authority. Chords will push your amp into glorious, symphonic mayhem. You can play this guitar like a regular Tele and it will just give you more. It is an extremely rewarding instrument to play and will quickly end the search for good tone on a gig.
How Does It Play?
Mario guitars are dialed in perfectly by the builders. We’re just 30 miles up the road from them so we have the privilege of stopping by to pick these fine instruments up in person. But we still do our due diligence here at the shop just as on every other guitar we sell, making sure we are familiar with the guitar on a personal level and giving one more test of every component and a final check on the setup before shipping. This one sets up at a very nice 4/32” on the low E at the 12th fret and 3/32” on the high E, without any buzz.
