Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Do We Think?
This 1pc Swamp Ash Honcho delivers tones that are a delicious mix of glassy and thick. This one features a set of Lollar pickups with staggered pole pieces chosen by Mario specifically for his Honcho model. It is a marvelously balanced guitar.
The neck position is meaty and delivers a nice grind a bit earlier than you would get with a vintage output pickup. Yet it does not come across as overwound; it is very lively and maintains excellent string to string definition. Neck/middle has the quintessential quack and a bit more of a stringy EQ sculpt to it, but all with plenty of thump underneath.
The bridge position delivers tones equal parts Strat and Tele. It doesn’t back down in volume from the other positions either. The Tele-esque attack is met by the chime of a Strat for a truly wide-open tonal spectrum that packs a punch. Bridge/middle maintains that punch and takes on a bit of the filtered “in-between” Strat sound to go with it.
How Does It Play?
The string action measures barely a hair over 4/64” at the 12th fret on the bass side, and under 4/64” on the treble side. Good and low without fretbuzz. The neck measures just .840 at the 1st fret and .910 at the 12th, so don’t let the “Chunky C” designation fool you. We tend to think of Mario’s Chunky C as a nice rounded medium C, and this one measures even a hair smaller than the average. Supportive but fast.
