Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Do We Think?
We’re loving the Roasted Maple neck, Madagascar Rosewood fretboard and Swamp Ash body recipe on this one. First, it delivers a weight well under 7lb. But even more importantly, this combo delivers a wonderfully balanced tonal response. The swamp ash body provides snappy low end resonance and extended overtones up top. The Madagascar Rosewood fretboard delivers a close approximation to Brazilian Rosewood but with a little more warmth inherent in the midrange, both visually and tonally a perfect complement to the roasted neck. Acoustically, the guitar is a pleasure to listen to.
Through the Arcane 61 Experience pickup set, the guitar has the clean midrange and “conversational” touch response you expect from a turn-of-the-decade 60’s-inspired set. “Clear and Sweet tones” as Arcane describes them. The lows are tight and the highs are silky. Measuring around 6.2k resistance, they leave plenty of freedom for your amp to breathe, and lots of space for the tonal properties of the guitar to shine. This guitar can go from intimate to roaring, but remains expressive every step of the way.
How Does It Play?
Mario’s guitars always set up incredibly well. With the roasted maple neck, you have an extra measure of assurance that this neck will hold just right and minimize the need for seasonal adjustments. This one features Mario’s Chunky C neck profile, which is succeeded by Chunky C+ and Chunky C++ in the size hierarchy before reaching baseball bat. That is to say, not excessively chunky. It is comparable to a ’65 C from Fender’s Custom Shop, as a point of reference. Great feeling neck any way you describe it.
