LsL has developed a new line of boutique guitars loosly based on existing models in the LsL lineup. Calling the brand ‘Newhall’, they are unlike any models currently in production. Newhall Guitars feature bold design choices that are meant to break new ground yet stay true to vintage roots, giving their luthiers creative license to try things that wouldn’t be possible as LsL.
From Newhall: Everything you see coming from Newhall will be something that you have not seen LSL do before. This is an exciting time for us! We get to do custom builds that are completely unexpected and even better, we get to share them directly with the public!
What Does Cam Think?
This Newhall Tango 390 is a trip! It’s a relic’ed T-style guitar with some cool vintage appointments. The body is made of a chambered swamp ash, giving it an almost thin-line feel. When you play it acoustically, it’s extremely resonant and quite loud. The aging is well executed with very realistic wear spots in the right places. I really like the Chopped-Tele bridge as well! The look and feel is spot on, but how are the tones?
You may wonder how practical this three P90 setup is, but Newhall has thought it through. You won’t have to worry about your hand knocking into the P90’s when you play. With the neck angle, there is plenty of room for your right hand and pick to work.
The P90 set reminds me of fatter sounding single coils. The 5-way switch takes advantage of all the classic positions. The neck has pleasant high’s, tight lows, and a mildly scooped midrange. It’s great for chords or fat single notes. The middle pickup sounds like the neck, but with more midrange and a tighter low end. The bridge pickup is bright and juicy in the midrange, and balances well with the other pickups. Positions 2 and 4 sound great with a nice quack, but beefier that the typical quack. The Tango 390 is a very versatile guitar with a vast tonal paintbrush!
How Does It Play?
The action sits at a hair over 4/64” on the low E string and right at 4/64” on the high E string, measured at the 12th fret. The Medium C profile is chunky and fills out nicely as you ascend the neck. The wear on the back of the neck is very much in the Novo or Fano style. It really feels like a worn in neck with hundreds of hours of playtime. The fretwork is great, making this Newhall a breeze to play!
