What Does Josh Think?
We are very excited that Novo has added Firebird pickups to the options list for 2026. We ordered this guitar in fall of ’25 as part of a 5 guitar limited run featuring the pickups before they were even available as standard order. So you can skip the line and get them here!
The Lollar Firebirds in this guitar are tight and punchy. Think the broad EQ spectrum of a single coil but with a bit more output, a touch of compression, and a knock-your-socks off attitude if you let the bridge pickup rip. They are also hum-cancelling.
The neck position is deep and woody on bottom, a character we’re all familiar with if we’ve played any Serus J. But what happens in the midrange with the Firebird pickup is magical. The midrange opens up and begins to sparkle. The pickup has a touch of the roundness you get out of a humbucker, but with more dynamic range and note articulation.
The bridge position sounds crisp and clear through a clean amp. But it really thrives with overdrive. You can pull off Van Halen on this guitar. It’s fat, but firm. You can roll the tone back if you want to cop some full humbucker-styled tones. But you may find yourself perfectly content with the extended top end because it rolls off at just the perfect place to give you clarity without brittleness.
If you don’t find yourself reaching for the vibrato arm, no problem. The Mastery bridge allows the strings to move freely and stay in tune through even more aggressive playing and string bending. And it works equally well in conjunction with the vibrato when looking to add a bit of 3-dimensional swirl to sustained chords.
How Does It Play?
The neck sits on the generous side of a medium C, nice and supportive in the hand. The 9.5-14” fretboard radius brings a touch of modern to the equation, allowing low string action without any buzz even on bends up the neck. The string action measures jsut 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and even a tad lower on the high E. There is no fret buzz anywhere on the neck.
