What Do We Think?

For all you cats waiting for a Novo to pop up with stainless frets, here it is! You’ve got jumbo stainless steel frets on an ebony fretboard, locking tuners on the headstock, and a Tempered Maple neck mounted to the Tempered Pine body. Loaded with a pair of Fralin P-90s, a Mastery bridge and Novo-engraved Mastery vibrato.

As always, the Lake Como Blue shows a lot of variety under different lighting, with hints of brighter Lake Placid or turquoise showing at times, and other times a dark and brooding navy blue.

The bridge position has all the P-90 bark, and a little extra snap due to the super quick transients coming off the stainless frets. This holds true in the other positions as well. Middle is position is nice and spanky, great for funk or more acoustically-minded fingerpicking. And the neck position is spry and articulate while maintaining warm lows.

The process Novo uses to cure their woods draws out a character typically found only in vintage guitars with decades of natural aging. The traditional methods of baking can result in a guitar sounding and feeling a little stiff. But Novo’s tempering process brings out a resonance than makes the guitar feel perfectly broken in. We thoroughly enjoy the results.

How Does It Play?

The medium C neck is subtly sanded for a completely non-stick but natural feel down the back of the neck. The fretboard edges are nicely, though not aggressively, rounded. The string action measures just a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and right at 4/64” on the high E string. There is no fretbuzz and no dead spots anywhere on the neck.
