What Does Cam Think?

The Solus model is one that I don’t see too often at the shop, and that is a shame! It’s got great specs with a 24.75” scale length, compound 9.5”-14” radius, and Jumbo frets for easy playability. The ‘German Carve’ offset single cut body is quite unique, and very comfortable. And the metallic ‘Gold Top Gold’ paint looks stunning on the tempered pine body; there is so much detail and nuance in the finish!

Sonically, this Solus is working with a pair of Fralin Modern PAF pickups. They are Fralin’s twist on a ‘50s PAF with a modern spin. The neck pickup is full, meaty, and clear. It’s what I expect in a great PAF, but with a tighter bass response. It still has plenty of low-end, but it’s never flubby, even when gained up.

The bridge pickup is all vintage PAF, but a bit thicker overall with slightly more output. Chords retain excellent note separation even with heavy drive. It has that PAF bark and bite, but doesn’t sound nasally, which can be an issue with some PAF style humbuckers. And it excels with some drive! In the middle, that scooped single coil tone is extra funky, with wonderful clarity and heft. There are lots of great tones to be had!

How Does It Play?

The medium C neck has just the right amount of girth, supporting your hand with chords and hot licks alike. It’s also sanded down to a silky-smooth feel on the back. You’ll never have any nitro stickiness to contend with while you play. The jumbo frets are great for general comfort and never having to fight the fretboard under your fingers. String action sits at 4/64” across all strings measured at the 12^th fret.
