How Does Josh Think?

What a guitar! This build blends the stylings and warmth of Novo’s standard Miris J model with the snap of a maple top and the punch of a pair of Lollar Imperial humbuckers. It’s difficult to use any other guitar as a frame of reference.

The neck pickup is smoky, deep and warm. But there is always an acoustic-like articulation on the note that is undoubtedly the contribution of the maple top and most likely aided by the mass of the Mastery trem hardware. This position will most certainly find favor with your inner blues player.

The bridge has more grit and twang. Think of it as having Firebird tendencies but with more low end to support it. Or for a bigger stretch, think a fat Tele bridge pickup with a bit more output and a welcome touch of compression.

Cleans in the bridge position are snappy and candid, but this pickup also tames an overdriven amp with ease. The low mid register is tight and punchy, pushing your chord work to the front of the mix. The top end sings and sustains, and is very compliant to your tone knob for tonal shaping on the fly.

The middle position really emphasizes the acoustic resonance of the guitar and conveys it marvelously through an amp. If articulation is the name, this position owns the game. It is big-bodied, yet crisp. Very dreadnought-like. Any time I run across a position like this, I am immediately drawn to big open position chords and tight intervals. But no matter where you are on the neck, every note strikes clearly and confidently.

How Does It Play?

We have this beauty set up with the low E string at 5/64” and the high E at 4/64”, measured at the 12^th fret. The action feels nice and low and there is no choking out of the notes anywhere on the neck. The profile is Novo’s fabled medium C with finish removed tastefully from the back.
