What Do We Think?

Novo took its already versatile Serus J and added a great twist for us with the addition of the Lollar Firebird pickups. They don’t normally offer these but we worked out a Limited Run exclusive to Guitars To Be Played!

The Tempered Pine body is remarkably resonant, and the Lollar Firebirds exploit that acoustic quality with perfect articulation. Think the big, open character of single coils but with outstanding support in the low end and just a touch of the compressed, rounded attack of a traditional humbucker. The neck has a touch of “chew” while remaining clear and slightly scooped, and the bridge adds some nice punch to the jazzmaster-inspired recipe.

Cosmetically, this guitar hits all the marks too. The sparkle Lake Placid Blue finish is features not only on the body but also on the headstock. The East Indian rosewood fretboard is fantastically dark and adorned with block inlays and binding. The neck itself is flamed maple, baked to a perfect honey brown.

The process Novo uses to cure their woods draws out a character typically found only in vintage guitars with decades of natural aging. The traditional methods of baking can result in a guitar sounding and feeling a little stiff. But Novo’s tempering process brings out a resonance than makes the guitar feel perfectly broken in. We thoroughly enjoy the results.

How Does It Play?

The medium C neck is subtly sanded for a completely non-stick but natural feel down the back of the neck. The string action straddles 4/64” at the 12^th fret, good and low without buzz. The fret ends are nicely rounded and the binding work is executed to perfection.
