What Does Cam Think?

The Voltur model is part Firebird, part Explorer, but all Novo! It’s a unique shape that drips mojo and demands to be seen. The body is made from lightweight tempered pine, so it’s quite resonant. The finish is a lightly aged ‘Gold Top Gold’ under a thin lacquer. The way the gold sinks into the wood grain is gorgeous and satisfyingly tactile. It’s a stunning instrument visually, and sonically as well!

Pickups are a pair of Fralin P90’s. Even though I’m a die-hard humbucker fan, I’m in love with these pickups! They have this magical midrange that’s full of harmonics. The neck P90 is chimey and bright, but still full in the low-end. It’s like the perfect PAF with some added treble and a juicy midrange.

The bridge P90 is detailed in the top-end, but not brittle. The lows are tight and the mids are pleasantly pushed. This EQ curve makes for a beautiful edge of breakup tone that’s dripping with character and vibe. The middle position has an acoustic-like attack and bloom. It’s an underutilized tone that can also pass for a fat singlecoil in feel and response.

The mastery bridge is an elegant solution to the Jazzmaster style tremolo, both in feel and sound. It’s exceptionally stable for this type of tremolo, returning to pitch well. It’s also designed with a softer break angle, keeping the feel nice and slinky and putting less pressure on the saddles. Everyone should have a P90 guitar, and this one sure is a great one!   

How Does It Play?

The neck is a Chunky C with plenty to grab on to. It fills out nicely as you ascend the neck, but in a supportive way. I never felt like the size slowed me down. The string action sits right at 4/64” across all strings, measured at the 12^th fret. There is no fretbuzz. The fret ends are perfectly round and the neck feels uncannily smooth as you move up and down the fingerboard.
