Inspired by San Diego's blend of surf, skate, auto and music cultures, the A-Type re-imagines electric guitar design into a sound and feel all its own. The trussed, slim hollow body is remarkably lightweight and uniquely voiced to combine resonance, sustain and feedback suppression. An asymmetrical fretboard radius makes playing and bending strings effortless and produces a more consistent tonal character.

What Does Cam Think?

This was the first Powers Electric Guitar I had the pleasure of playing. To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect. Immediately, I was blown away at the quality of construction. The transition between the gloss flame maple top and the satin body is flawless. The in-house made hardware, pickups, even knobs are all expertly crafted. This is a very high-quality instrument with excellent attention to detail.

The A-Type features an ash body, solid maple top, mahogany neck, and rosewood board. Its construction is more acoustic than electric, featuring a true hollow body design. It’s braced like an acoustic and features two sound posts, allowing the top and back to move simultaneously. This maximizes the guitar’s natural resonance and helps to suppress feedback. It’s a unique guitar design that’s also quite loud acoustically; I haven’t played anything quite like it. And coming in at under 6 lbs, your shoulder and back will thank you!

This A-Type features the ‘Full Faraday’ pickups. They are single coils and feature a completely enclosed aluminum ‘cage’ which helps to reduce overall noise. They remind of a cross between a P90 and a low-wind humbucker. The bridge position is extremely quiet and has a very engaging voicing. The treble is quite rolled off, but in a pleasant way. It might be the only bridge position single coil where I can strum chords without the result being too bright in the high-end. It also works well with gain and never sounds too strident.

The neck position is very well suited for jazz tones with its darker voicing. It’s noticeably full and meaty with a round tonality, but not overly so. The middle position is like a great compromise between the two pickup tones. You can still get that scooped funky thing, but even more acoustic in timbre, due to the hollow body design.

The tone control is also a unique feature on the A-Type. Instead of it rolling off high-end, if basically shifts the midrange focus, leaving you with usable tones across the entire sweep of the knob. With so many player-friendly upgrades and elements, you can tell a guitar player has designed this instrument!

How Does It Play?

The string action measures right at 4/64” on the low E string measured at the 12th fret, and just under 4/64” on the high E string. The neck is a nicely supportive C. You have plenty to hold on to, but there isn’t excess mass that would hinder comfort. The frets are jumbo, but don’t feel excessive. Fretting is easy and you can really get around quick when you need to. The neck is also very nicely rolled and just so comfortable. The finish is a velvet-like matte, so no sticky neck-feel with this one!
