What Do We Think?

The D20 JL pushes the resonant frequency of the mids up from low mids to… well… mid mids. This steers the amp away from the more scooped profile of the D20 MK2 and into the brownface stylings of an early 60’s Fender. The colorway of the JL is not just a gimmick. Your ears and eyes will indeed converge on the delicious tonal color coming out of the D20 JL.

Voiced as it is, this amp is a fantastic candidate for those edge-of-breakup tones and beyond. The power tube breakup is glorious if you push the Volume knob into the 2 or 3 o’clock regions. But if you prefer to get your breakup in the preamp section, never fear. The Boost switch will take you there very easily and leave the Volume knob free to control the overall output level of the amp.

This amp also FEELS amazing, whether running it clean and pedal platform-friendly or pushing the preamp and power sections into submission. It responds adeptly as you roll back the tone or volume on the guitar or flip through pickup positions. A 5W setting is available if you need to push the amp hard at low volumes, but don’t forget you can disengage your speaker cab entirely and go XLR direct out when needed!

The touch sensitivity and transparency of the amp convey flawlessly through the DI out. We’ve found getting great tones to be as simple as using Preset 1 with a little 100hz rolloff added at the board or in the DAW, just as we’d do with a real mic on a cab. But you can tweak the Two Notes cab IR presets to your heart’s content, swapping out cabs, mics and mic positions.
