The Lion Deluxe model is all about options and big, heavy tone. Select a mahogany body with a pair of Lollar P-90s, an alder body equipped with a pair of Lollar humbuckers, or a blend of the two pickup options—the choice is yours. The Lion Deluxe comes complete with a nice tummy cut for comfort and separate volume and tone controls for each pickup for the ultimate tonal control.

What Do We Think?

Aside from the obvious Tuxedo-inspired touches, this guitar truly imparts a healthy dose of Black Beauty specs and tones. Its a mahogany body loaded with s Lollar P-90 standard in neck and Imperial in bridge… best of both worlds of the early-to-mid ‘50s Gibbys and their ‘60s humbucker-equipped counterparts.

The tone is unmistakably woody with its mahogany body, but does not lack for growl and articulation. The midrange of the bridge position is generous with a nice dry honk through a clean amp and a thick snarl in front of some dirt. Through a modded Plexi style amp it’s reminiscent of the Van Halen brown sound.

The P-90 has a little more spank and “air” in the neck position than you would get with a humbucker. But at the risk of overusing the word, we want to highlight the fact that its “woodiness” is one of its most notable and endearing qualities at the same time. And the middle position doesn’t sound filtered quite the same way a dual-humbucker middle position does, allowing you to hear both pickups in their full glory.

If feels the part too… The neck is left slightly chunkier than Avi Shabat’s normal medium C, measuring 0.865” deep at the 1^st fret and 0.955” at the 12^th. The width measures 1.69” at the nut. Even the fretboard binding contributes to that feel of a Black Beauty. Ebony and block inlays as well. One thing you wouldn’t find, but sure is nice on the eyes… the roasted flame maple neck. And yes, you’re getting the full 25.5” Fender scale length on this as well.

How Does It Play?

The setup work coming out of Avi’s shop is impeccable. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E and even lower on the high E (12^th fret). No fretbuzz. The fret ends are smooth and nicely rounded. The nut slots are cut to perfection, truly some of the best we’ve seen, allowing string bends to return to “zero” every time.
