Longtime friend Gonzalo Bergara asked Avi to create a great blues machine that is super light and responsive—the result is the Lion GB. It offers a featherweight sugar pine body fitted with a 3-saddle vintage-style Gotoh bridge, a beefy Lollar Charlie Christian neck pickup and Lollar J-Street bridge pickup.
What Do We Think?
A wonderful blend of vintage and modern both in feel and aesthetic. This Lion GB features a AAAA figured one piece roasted maple neck with matching skunk stripe and a lightweight Sugar Pine body in beautifully aged Pelham Blue. The Lollar pickup pairing in this guitar is especially versatile; whether you are looking to lay down atmospheric textures, tear through chord solos, or cut the rug with some straight up chicken picking, this guitar has the bones and the poise to pull it off.
The Charlie Christian in the neck gives you a warm and punchy bottom along with a rounded, vocal midrange that really encourages you to break chords apart and hear the nuances of each chord tone and single-note line. The J-Street in the bridge has a bold, defined bite and responds particularly well to the tone knob, “smoothing” out with a little turn to take on more of the profile of a thick P-90. The middle position delivers a crisp spank along with a big, confident bottom end.
And then there are the ergonomics. The body edges are rounded more than on a traditional T-style, a simple touch but one that is immediately perceived and appreciated. Even the pickguard edges are nicely rounded, and Avi is using nice thick stock that bears a distinctly vintage look. The three-way selector switch is situated at a slight angle to make throwing back to the bridge position all that much easier. It’s a wonderful experience to play an instrument where all the small details come together, and this is most certainly one of those instruments!
How Does It Play?
This beauty plays at 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and 3/64” on the high E, no fret buzz. The neck is a comfortably full C measuring .870” at the first fret and .950” at the 12th. The clear lacquer is sanded off the back for an incredibly fast and smooth feel. It is also worth noting that this guitar stays in tune with the best of them. String bend to your heart’s content. The nut slots are cut perfectly, and the unique headstock design allows for minimal “kink” in the strings at the nut.
