The Lion Baritone offers the classic T-style guitar in a 27” extended scale length, and strung B-to-B for extra-heavy, earth-rumbling tones and a broader sonic spectrum. The Lion Baritone can be custom-built in either the Lion Special (small guard) or Lion Deluxe (large guard) format, fitted with a pair of Lollar P-90s or Imperial humbuckers, and a Gotoh hardtail bridge.
What Does Cam Think?
Baritone guitars are one of the most underutilized instruments among guitarists. It’s deceptively easy to transition to a baritone guitar, and this Lion Special Baritone will make that transition even easier. Like every Shabat we have, the build quality and attention to detail is second to none. It’s no surprise Shabat is one of the hottest boutique builders on the market. And who better to build the baddest of all baritones?
We spec’d out this Lion Special with woods that would maintain clarity, yet retain bottom end and punch to keep this beast sounding full and meaty. The swamp ash body, maple neck, and ebony board come together providing a moderately scooped midrange, articulate high-end, and thunderous low-end. This is the ideal sonic fingerprint for a baritone to have. It can cut through a mix while maintaining a solid foundation.
The Lollar P90’s are the perfect pickup for this build. With thicker strings and the baritone tuning, it’s very easy for things to end up muddy. The neck position Lollar has a mellowness that works great in the lower register. It has an almost acoustic hi-fi quality with substantial depth. The bridge position P90 is articulate and snappy but still full and commanding. Power chords cut and single notes chime, even with a gained-up amp. And the 27” scale length keeps the strings taught enough to maintain pitch with aggressive riffing.
How Does It Play?
The string action measures at 4.5/64” on the low B string at the 12th fret, and just over 4/64” on the high B at the 12th fret. The frets are beautifully polished and buttery smooth. The medium C neck profile is full and supportive without excess depth. I absolutely love the roasted flame maple neck with matching skunk stripe. It’s this type of attention to detail that sets Shabat apart from pack.
