The Lion Special was designed for players who want a Lion guitar, but with a little different sound than a standard T-style. The Lion Special offers a pair of Lollar P-90s or Imperial humbuckers, and a Gotoh hardtail or Graph Tech ResoMax wraptail bridge—all wrapped in your choice of classic nitro finishes.
What Does Ivey Think?
This Inverness Green Lion Special might be one of the most comfortable guitars we've ever played. The two body contours on this guitar just make it sit perfectly, and there really are no hard edges anywhere on the guitar for your arm or hands to find. Shabat does a great job of rounding pickguards, fret ends and binding edges, leaving no detail unaccounted for. The Medium C neck profile, Gibson-influenced 24.75” scale length and 43mm TUSQ nut are the icing on the cake.
Moving onto how this guitar actually sounds, it doesn't disappoint in that category either. We really like what the Graph Tech Resomax bridge adds to the tonal equation, delivering a little more snap than your standard Tune-o-matic and providing some great sustain as well. The Lollar Imperials sound fantastic in this guitar. The midrange of the bridge pickup sits in a really good spot through a variety of different amps. Never muddy or nasal and with just the right amount of bite and clarity.
The neck pickup has that velvety and smooth "Sweet Child O’ Mine" character under gain, but without notes smearing together so much that you lose note definition in the lower registers. When you clean up the amp, the tonality of the mahogany neck and body continues to shine. Even with all amp knobs at noon you are almost guaranteed to find a sweet top end and chewy lower midrange that sounds EQ’d to perfection.
How Does It Play?
The string action on this beauty rings in at just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12ths, and even lower on the high E. There is no fret buzz. The frets are polished to perfection and as mentioned earlier, the fret ends are wonderfully rounded to give you a smooth experience running your hand all the way up and down the medium C neck.
