The Lion Special was designed for players who want a Lion guitar, but with a little different sound than a standard T-style. The Lion Special offers a pair of Lollar P-90s or Imperial humbuckers, and a Gotoh hardtail or Graph Tech ResoMax wraptail bridge—all wrapped in your choice of classic nitro finishes.
What Does Cam Think?
Shabat is one of the most respected builders in the game today. Their guitars are always on point with a mix of attention to detail, premium components, and stunning looks. This Lion Special has certainly garnered the shop’s attention. This combination of specs is like a Les Paul on steroids, and the tone and playability support my hypothesis! The mahogany body and neck, along with the ebony fretboard provide a rock solid resonant platform. I think the combination of a traditional LP woods and the 25.5” scale length is a perfect marriage for huge tones with nice articulation. Speaking of tone, see below for how this thing sounds!
We love Lollar Pickups, and the Imperial is the gold standard by which we compare all other humbuckers. The neck pickup is full and warm with nice articulation. Perfect for jazz, rock, blues, and anything in-between. In the bridge, the tone is bright and powerful, but with a solid low-end. The mids are present, but not honky. With some gain, your chords sound thick and complex. Into a Bogner Shiva we have in stock, I was able to get some absolutely killer tones in all gain ranges, as well as squeaky clean funk.
How Does It Play?
The neck is a Medium C profile, measuring about 0.84” at the first fret and 0.95” at the 12th. It’s a super comfortable carve that will please the vast majority of players. The string action measures only 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E, and even lower on the high E. There is no fretbuzz anywhere on the neck! The frets are perfectly shaped, crowned, and rounded on the ends to a mirror shine. They are 55090 stainless steel from Jescar, about jumbo in height and slightly narrower in width, which makes for incredible playability.
