What Does Cam Think?

Shabat is known for their modern take on classic designs, but with a spin all their own. The Lion T-style is a shape that does very well for us. It’s, in my opinion, the quintessential Shabat instrument. It’s classic, iconic, and it just plain works. We’ve spec’ed this cool cat out to be a monster in the tone department, but it sure looks the part as well. Finished in a medium aged ebony lacquer, the nickel hardware and pickup pole pieces break up the monochromatic look. And at a little over 6.5 pounds, this thing is quite light, and super resonant!

This Lion is packing a pair of Lollar pickups, namely a Novel 90 in the bridge and an Alnico Pole in the neck. The neck position is a great P90 tone, but with a bit more sparkle in the highs. This really helps keep things clear and tight, never succumbing to muddiness. But that P90 midrange remains loud and proud.

The bridge position is where things get interesting in the tone department. The Novel 90 is like a fatter Tele bridge pickup, but without the abrasive top end. The focus is the midrange, which allows for single notes to remain thick, and chords to be stout and authoritative. There is a vowel-like characteristic to the Novel 90 that helps your playing stand out. The middle position is chimey and clear with a tight low end. Really nice for fingerstyle playing and complex chords.

How Does It Play?

The neck is a healthy medium C. We measure .855” at the first fret and .975” at the 12^th along with generous shoulder. The back of the neck is sanded down for a perfectly smooth playing experience. The string action sits right at 4/64” across all strings, measured at the 12^th fret. Shabat’s fretwork is always top notch, and we love the 6105 fret size.
