The Lion Special was designed for players who want a Lion guitar, but with a little different sound than a standard T-style. The Lion Special offers a pair of Lollar P-90s or Imperial humbuckers, and a Gotoh hardtail or Graph Tech ResoMax wraptail bridge—all wrapped in your choice of classic nitro finishes.

What Does Cam Think?

Every Shabat I’ve had the pleasure of trying has been awesome. They are super consistent instruments that ooze quality and attention to detail. This Lion Special has become one of my personal favorites. The combination of swamp ash, Lollar P90’s, maple neck, and the Gotoh 6 saddle bridge does something great tonally. And the stealth look of the matte black finish, black pickguard, and black P90’s is very nice. It’s a super sleek instrument.

I’ve always been a fan of P90’s, especially in a swamp ash guitar. These Lollars have a great midrange that a swamp ash body seems to accentuate. In the neck position, tones were nice and fat. Almost sounds like a PAF, but with boosted mids and attack. All the fatness was there, but with some extra clarity. The bridge pickup had a chime and attack that helped push my playing forward. Notes were articulate and had excellent separation. Also, Lollar makes a quiet P90! I’m not speaking on output, but general noise. I was quite impressed.

The Gotoh 6 saddle bridge is one of my favorite bridges on Shabbat instruments. It imparts a clarity and air that you can hear even unplugged. It makes the guitar feel alive. If you are looking for a Shabbat with a little something extra, this Lion Special is a great choice.

How Does It Play?

Avi Shabat is sourcing some outstanding Swamp Ash, so this guitar is super light on the shoulders at just 6lb 11oz. The 1pc flame maple neck is a sight to behold, but also packs all the feels with its easy-on-the-hand Medium C shape. The string action measures 4/64” across all strings at the 12^th fret. There is no buzz the frets are meticulously rounded to give you an effortless glide up and down the neck no matter your hand position.
