Every guitarist needs one single-coil guitar that delivers the perfect amount of bite and twang to cut through the mix—enter the Shabat Lion Standard. With an array of T-style pickups from Lollar to choose from and a feather-light body (ash, alder or pine) fitted with either a Gotoh three-saddle or modern six-saddle bridge, the Lion Standard offers incredible punch, sustain and resonance.
What Does Cam Think?
I love a lightweight T style guitar, and boy, does sugar pine make for a great lightweight guitar. Something about pine contributes to an airy and resonant tone. This airiness perfectly complements the tonal palette you’d want in a T style instrument. Add to that a maple neck and Lollar Special T pickups, and you have a killer sonic starting point.
The Lollar Special T pickups sound great. They are slightly darker and hotter across the board than other ‘T’ offerings from Lollar. The neck pickup has a bit more body than a standard vintage spec ‘T’ pickup, but not in a flubby way. The bridge position Special T is also slightly hotter, which is great for overdriven tones. In the middle position, you are treated to a delightful spank and sparkle. Great tones in every position!
After taking the Lion Standard for a spin through a Carr Mercury V, all my suspicions were confirmed. This thing works great in a rock context! The Lollar Specials excel with some grit. While humbuckers are the de-facto standard when it comes to overdrive, don’t sleep on the Specials. They have plenty of girth and enough brightness to kick things into gear but still sound articulate. It makes sense that these pickups are Lollar's most popular ‘T’ pickup.
How Does It Play?
The neck is a comfortable medium C profile. It’s a very natural and pleasing shape to play. With the 6105 frets, the neck carve offers an effortless riffing experience. String action is just over 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E string, and just under 4/64” at the 12th fret on the high E string.
