What Do We Think?
This guitar is mesmerizing both visually and sonically. The swirl in the custom plexi pickguard, the sparkle in the Aquamarine Firemist gloss finish, and the tonal options of a pair of Lindy Fralin WideRange pickups bookending a Jaguar single coil. Top it off with the Mastery bridge and tremolo and there's probably few gigs this guitar wouldn't handle.
The switches and knobs on offset guitars can sometimes be confusing, limiting or counterintuitive. But the way Shelton wires these guitars is pleasantly intuitive. The three pickup selectors are your standard on/off for each position. The traditional "rhythm circuit" switch actually engages a series-parallel switch for the WideRange pickups to dish up tones that are close to a coil split but without as much loss of volume.
We also love the treble and bass taper roller pots, which are very usable high and low pass filters. The different EQ moves you can do on this guitar are very effective. From basic moves like rolling off the tone knob, to more nuanced sculpting of the roller pots to highlight a lush midrange, the options are near endless.
The Fralin WideRange pickups in this guitar supply plenty of low-end with a crisp upper register that cuts really well. Engage the series-parallel switch to go from a meaty humbucker tone to a cleaned-up single coil voicing very easily. Roll off a little bass as desired if you want to even further ease up the signal going into your amp. And when adding in the middle pickup, you can achieve those in-between clucky Strat tones with little-to-no drop in output.
The Aquamarine Firemist gloss finish on the body (and matching headstock) has WAY more sparkle than we could capture on photos. This one is deserving of some real glamour shots, which sadly we have not taken. And like any good Firemist finish, the color changes a bit under the light. Everything from deep blues to vibrant teal.
How Does It Play?
We have this beauty set up a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and under 4/64” on the high E. That’s without any fretbuzz! The Medium Oval C neck profile fills out the hand comfortable but never gets chunky. The natural satin finish on the back is perfectly smooth and will resist stickiness as you put in the long hours!
