What Do We Think?

We promise you’ve never played another guitar quite like this one. From the Redwood body to the custom Fralin pickup set, this is a Shelton that has perhaps found a way to outdo itself!

The neck position is fat, nice and chewy but with a distinctly single-coil leaning sparkle to the mid- and upper registers. Certainly not to be described as bright, but it has a bite and clarity that a humbucker in the neck position tends to lack. And yet… this whole pickup set is hum-cancelling!

The middle pickup is brighter and spankier. This comes in handy when you want to really cut and stand out, but also serves to dish up fabulous “in-between” positions when mixed with neck or bridge. Neck and middle in particular sounds lush and juicy, with a subtle touch of Strat quack. Bridge and middle is a bit more midrange-forward and loves some gain.

The bridge pickup itself is powerful in tone, yet remains “vintage” in output like the other pickups. It has a bold bottom end and plenty of midrange while the top end stays distinct. The delivery is reminiscent of Foo Fighters’ “My Hero” thru a Marshall-style overdrive. And clean tones are Tele-esque without the twang.

A push/pull volume knob engages the neck pickup with any of the other positions, giving you a superb neck/bridge option along with neck/middle/bridge all together. The middle knob is a master tone, and the final knob is a reverse-throw volume to blend in the middle pickup in series alongside the neck or bridge (positions 1 & 5). This gives fat, wah-like versions of the in-between positions which sound really cool to push a fuzz or overdrive.

The Vega trem is a superb unit, melding the best of a Strat tremolo, Bigsby and Floyd Rose into one. While it feels quite traditional, it doesn’t pull out of tune as much as a standard Strat bridge. It bounces back to zero smoothly and immediately, and to exactly the same place every time. And like a Floyd, it allows for both dive bombs and up-whammies if you get the urge.

A flame roasted maple neck with Indian rosewood fretboard rounds out the spec set, along with Gotoh locking tuners that showcase tort buttons to match the Violin Burst satin finish.

How Does It Play?

This guitar sets up effortlessly, with string action hovering right around 4/64” at the 12^th fret without any buzz. The neck is classic and fast… think a rounded C with a little material removed from the back. It features nice shoulders that let it sit just right in the hand.
