What Do We Think?

This Solar Arrow takes some excellent queues from a classic. You’ve got a 24.75” scale length, mahogany neck set in a mahogany body, and 12” fretboard radius on a medium C neck for starters. But then add Shelton’s unique body styling, a Mastery Tremolo and a pair of rich Lambertones Grinders for pickups.

The tones are delicious and meaty, with a full-bodied low end and savory midrange. But you also get sweet precision in the upper register that you don’t often find with thicker pickups. In fact, the top end has the nice cut and energy of Coldplay’s “Adventure of a Lifetime”. The ebony fretboard makes sure your articulation is not lost amidst the massive tonal powers below.

The pickups are moderate output with Alnico 5 magnets in neck and Alnico 8 in bridge, allowing you to really control the compression and breakup of many amps right from your fingertips. The pickups can sound airy and uncompressed under a light touch, or sweep towards crunchy and throbbing under heavy pick attack. We find this instrument responds especially well to the EQ section of your amp to give you control over exactly where it sits in the band.

The Mastery tremolo feels bouncy and responsive. For players coming over from a Bigsby, it takes wonderfully to that quick side-of-the-palm slap for an instantaneous dip or vibrato on your sustained chords. The arm snaps in with a bushing, so unlike the original Fender design, it won’t fall out when you move around. In fact, the tremolo stays tight and “together” even when lifting up on the arm to raise pitch.

How Does It Play?

This beauty sets up with low string action of 4/64” at the 12^th fret across all strings. The medium C neck feels full but fast in the hands, with a 1.687” nut width and measuring just .835” deep at the 1^st fret.
