The Xotic XSC Series is for the player who wants a more vintage take on the Classic S-Style guitar, but with some modern improvements. Features include an SSS pickup configuration with a choice between hand-wound Raw Vintage RV-50 or RV-60 Pickups, vintage locking tuners, Jescar frets, and an aged lacquer finish. Lots of color options available!
What Does Cam Think?
Xotic is one of our favorite brands here at the shop. The combination of incredible aesthetics, amazing playability, impeccable craftsmanship, and superb sonics make these instruments very hard to beat, especially if you are looking for a ‘T’ or ‘S’ style guitar with zero compromises. This XSC-1 in Desert Sand is one of the more heavily reliced Xotics we have received. And as far as the aged look, this thing is spot on! The ash body peaks through the finish around the arm countour and body edges. The flame maple neck and fretboard also have playwear, making this quite a comfortable guitar!
Speaking of sonics, this XSC-1 features my favorite Xotic pickup set, the RV-50 single coils. They differ from the RV-60 set, in that they tend to be on the mellow side with moderate output and a less abrasive top-end.
The RV-50 neck pickup is the star of the show for me. It’s glassy and smooth making it the ideal neck position single. It has enough body and the perfect amount of top-end detail to poke through, but its subdued nature makes it so versatile. The middle pickup has the midrange content to stand proud on its own or add that classic quack to positions 2 and 4, which are killer in this guitar.
The bridge pickup is where some ‘S’ style guitars fall short, but this RV-50 single in the bridge is about as good as it gets. It’s bright enough to push the amp a little, but it's not abrasive or thin. It has just the right amount of body and a tight low end. This pickup set can do it all, from classic ‘S’ style cleans to classic rock, and everything in-between.
How Does It Play?
The neck is a modern C profile, measuring about 0.84” at the first fret and 0.92” at the 12th. The frets are beautifully shaped, as are the fret ends. The string action measures right at 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E and just under 4/64” on the high E. The neck feels broken in and ultra smooth. Playability is off the charts!
