What Does Cam Think?
This latest XTC-1 is another example of the kind of attention to detail and incredible design we’ve come to expect from Xotic. Every Xotic instrument I’ve laid my hands on has been exceptional, but the ‘T’-style XTC builds have been at the top of the heap. They have all exhibited the indescribable quality that us guitarists covet in an instrument, mojo.
This beauty is finished in a Fiesta Red over 3-Tone Sunburst with heavy aging. It’s a beautiful contrast and looks like a real vintage guitar. The wear is natural and in all the right places; nothing is exaggerated.
Acoustically, the guitar is quite loud. It almost sounds like a thinline unplugged, which speaks volumes to its acoustic resonance. If it sounds this good unplugged, you know it will sound great plugged in!
The RV-TE pickups are relatively low noise, but still on par tonally with their vintage influences. The neck pickup is full, yet articulate, leaving plenty of harmonic space for your notes to be clear and nuanced. If you play soft, notes are on the darker side. Put some oomph in your right hand, and your lines punch with top-end character.
The bridge position has plenty of growl and treble to cut through and stand tall. Yes, it’s THAT ‘T’-style bridge position tone, the one we know and love. The percussive pop is available whenever you need it, as are smooth lead tones with a relaxing of the right hand. The responsiveness of this guitar is off the charts. In the middle, that funky scooped tone is on full display, great for chords or lines alike. This XTC-1 is the real deal!
How Does It Play?
The string action sits at just 4/64” on the low E string measured at the 12th and just under 4/64” on the high E. The Medium C neck profile is full and supportive, but still extremely comfortable. The neck is silky smooth with a matte finish. Xotic does some of the best frets around! They are super smooth with zero sharp edges.
