What Does Cam Think?
We’ve played many Xotic XTC-1’s since we have become a dealer. They are all amazing instruments with one of the best necks around. But, this XTC-1 stands out from the crowd. Maybe it is the unique non-aged Lime Gold finish? Maybe it’s the lacquered neck? I’m not totally sure if it’s one specific thing, but I do really like this one! Notable features include an alder body, flame maple neck, rosewood board, Jescar 55090 nickel silver frets, and hand-wound Xotic RV-TE pickups.
The RV-TE pickups have got to be some of the best T-style pickups I’ve played. Now I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not a Tele picker by trade. But, I do know a great Tele tone when I hear one. The RV-TE bridge pickup is bright, twangy, and full of punch. In front of a clean amp, you almost feel it in your chest. But, as the store owner Josh pointed out as I was demoing the guitar, it never gets too bright or too abrasive. Also, you can use this pickup for many things that aren’t stereotypically Tele. For edge of breakup into AC/DC territory, this thing smokes!
The neck pickup is also very useable. It’s warm and buttery, with just the right amount of top-end clarity to even things out. I think the neck pickup in this style of guitar often gets overlooked. I honestly like it just as much as a Strat neck position.
The middle position yields a nice marriage of the two tones, with a carved-out midrange, full bass, and chimey treble. You may not want to use this guitar for death metal, but boy, you can cover just about anything else!
How Does It Play?
The string action measures just a hair over 4/64” on the low E string, and right at 4/64” on the high E string, measured at the 12th fret. The Xotic Modern C neck profile is one of the best neck profiles around. It has very round shoulders for superb comfort. This is the first Xotic I’ve played with a lacquered neck, and I’m in love. It’s not sticky and doesn’t inhibit your movement. It’s clearly a very light lacquer application to protect the wood and enhance the beauty of the figured maple.
The Jescar nickel/ silver fretwire is top notch. You get the tonality of nickel/ silver with durability that’s closer to that of stainless steel. The 55090 fret size is probably the most versatile all-around fret profile. It’s plenty tall for enhanced playability, but not as wide as jumbo width, so it doesn’t feel oversized.
