The Xotic XTC-1 is a premium T-Style instrument combining vibrant appointments and vintage tonality. Standard options include an ash or alder body, maple or rosewood fingerboard, and a roasted maple or roasted figured maple neck. As Xotic puts it, the XTC is truly a vintage style electric guitar with modern appointments. The XTC-1 Custom takes the XTC-1 a step further with numerous custom options such as body wood type, neck and fretboard wood type, inlay material, fret size, custom colors, and more. Make your dream XTC a reality!
What Does Cam Think?
This XTC-1 Custom is a hot-rodded T Style with premium components. You’ll immediately notice the unique aged Dog Hair finish, highlighting the mahogany grain with black and silver notes. There is some edge wear and finishing checking, giving the instrument a broken in feel. The aged nickel hardware really helps set off the vintage inspired look.
This XTC-1 also features an ebony board, which plays off the body color and looks great against the mahogany neck. It also tightens up the attack of each note, giving you great tones across all pickup positions. Other features include a modern 12” radius and Jescar 51108 frets, similar to Dunlop 6100 jumbo but just a touch shorter for a smoother playing experience.
All XTC-1 Customs are unique based on what options were chosen. The mahogany body and neck were chosen not only for looks, but for the solid foundation mahogany gives you tonally. It’s a great wood choice for brighter pickups, or if you want a beefier starting point. I think the RV-PAF’s really shine here.
When I sat down to play the guitar, I initially expected a dark tonality, but both pickups seemed very well balanced. That’s a testament to the pairing of components in the guitar. The neck pickup sounded full but not muddy. The middle position added a little bit of twang, but not in an over the top or distracting way. The bridge position was brighter, but very dynamic and still well balanced with the other positions. This is a great 2 humbucker guitar that shines in all the right ways.
How Does It Play?
The neck is a modern C profile, measuring about 0.84” at the first fret and 0.92” at the 12th. The fret ends are beautifully rounded with a mirror finish. The string action measures just over 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E string, and right at 4/64" on the high E string. A stunning instrument in feel and looks!
