The Xotic XTC-1 is a premium T-Style instrument combining vibrant appointments and vintage tonality. Standard options include an ash or alder body, maple or rosewood fingerboard, and roasted maple or roasted figured maple neck. As Xotic puts it, the XTC is truly a vintage style electric guitar with modern appointments. Make your dream XTC a reality!
What Does Cam Think?
Xotic has been a shop favorite ever since we received our first batch of instruments. They are super high quality, great sounding guitars with incredible attention to detail. I describe them as vintage in look and sound, with modern playability and quality.
This is the very first XTC-TL model we have seen at the shop, and boy, what a great introduction! I absolutely love thin-line guitars, but with some, you get the idea that it’s more for show than anything else. This XTC-TL was built from the ground up to take advantage of the almost acoustic quality a semi-hollow guitar can impart to its sonic fingerprint. It’s wild how alive and resonant this one is.
Like the other XTC’s we have at the shop, this XTC-TL has proprietary Xotic RV-TE pickups. The bridge position has that typical ‘T’ style brightness, but with a slightly smoother character. This is probably in part due to the semi-hollow design. There is a bit more bloom in the attack, and maybe not quite as much immediacy. That is translating to a mellower tonality overall.
The neck position seems to really benefit from semi-hollow body. It’s quite full and throaty with a pleasant mid focus. You still get the articulation you need for singe note runs, but there is a bottom-end that I haven’t heard in solid body ‘T’ style guitars. And the middle position is almost acoustic in its articulation. It’s a great position to strum some chords or even get a little funky!
How Does It Play?
The string action measures just 4/64” across all strings at the 12th fret. The Modern C neck profile is a little misleading, as the feel in my hand is more vintage than modern, but extremely comfortable. The shape doesn’t get too full or bloated up the neck, yet it remains supportive to the hand.
The Jescar nickel silver fretwire is top notch. You get the tonality of nickel/ silver with durability that’s closer to that of stainless steel. The 51108 fret size works well with this guitar’s flatter 12” radius. Bends are easy and chords intonate well. The satin feel of the neck is fast without a hint of stickiness.
