Just arrived from the good folks at Novo! Introducing this brand new Custom Serus J with Lollar Gold Foils in Faded Sparkling Burgundy. Any Novo with the Mastery bridge is a winner in my book. Add to that a set of Lollar Gold Foils; it’s a match made in tone heaven.
What Does Cam Think?
There is a reason why the Serus J is one of the most popular models Novo makes. The amount of mojo that oozes from this guitar is insane. Every Serus feels like a one-of-a-kind piece. The way the finish soaks into the tempered pine body gives each Novo its own fingerprint. And at just a bit over 7lbs, this thing is light and super resonant!
I took this Serus J for a spin through a Victoria Vicky Verb combo, which is definitely ‘Fender inspired’. All pickup positions were lively and full of flavor, and we have the Lollar Gold Foils to thank for that! It was my first time with Gold Foils and now I understand the hype!
The neck position was chimey in the highs with a subtle thump in the bass. It sounded great with chords and arpeggios, shimmering in the high-end yet meaty in the lows. It’s a pickup that can excel in many situations with the right tone knob or amp setting.
The bridge Gold Foil was bright and powerful, but not thin. It was rich in harmonic content with a gorgeous midrange. With a little gain, the harmonics filled the room with a delicious grind. The Lollar Gold Foils are a force of tone to be reckoned with! And you’ll have endless hours of expression with the buttery smooth bar action of the Mastery Bridge, which is a staple of this model. It is one of the smoothest tremolo systems available!
How Does It Play?
The medium C neck is subtly sanded for a completely non-stick but natural feel down the back of the neck. The fretboard edges are nicely, though not aggressively, rounded. The string action measures just a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and right at 4/64” on the high E string. There is no fretbuzz and no dead spots anywhere on the neck. My playing felt intentional and fluid.
